"Conservative women ecstatic over Palin"

... from USA Today headline. Most of the women interviewed at the campaign rally at Franklin and Marshall College and by phone were middle aged homemakers/stay at home moms. The general consensus is that all of these women support the potential VP for three reasons : her stance on women's right to abortion (she's pro-life), she's a mom, and she's a woman.

Conservative women are gushing over the fact that she chose to have a baby even after she was informed the baby would have Down syndrome and because her 17 yr old daughter opted to have her baby despite being young and unwed. Any woman in her 40's who decides to get pregnant is probably aware that the chances of having a child with Down syndrome are extremely high. (Despite many years of research to identify risk factors associated with Down syndrome, only one factor, advanced maternal age, has been well established. CDC website)) There is a 1 in 30 chance that a pregnant woman aged 45 years will deliver a child with Down syndrome. Gov. Palin was 44 when she gave birth. But who needs science and medicine when you've got God, right? Let's applaud this genius. As for her daughter... she's 17. She's probably in love with her boyfriend and welcomes this opportunity as a means to trap and keep him. Not that he's complaining.. his future mother-in-law is the future Vice President of the United States. Think of all the job opportunities he'll have now.

Let's not leave out the fact that the Palin's are a family with means. Caring for dependents monetarily is not an obstacle for them. Children born with Down syndrome are dependents for life. Can you really blame someone who doesn't want to take on that responsibility? Also, Palin's daughter will never have to worry about how she's going to finish college while working to support her child. I'm sure mommy will work something out.

I just think it's plain silliness for any of these three factors to play a role in determining who one would vote for. I'm beginning to wonder if women should have been granted the right after all. Seriously, these women are an embarrassment to our gender. Especially the so-called "hockey moms" and unemployed home-makers. Get a job and stop popping out kids and maybe then you will actually have something better to say. I apologize if I sound cynical and angry... I think Sarah Palin's self-righteous grin is getting to me.
